The Kentucky State Penitentiary, which opened in 1889, is commonly referred to as “The Castle on the Cumberland.” Renovations and construction of new buildings have occurred frequently over the past 100 years. The Penitentiary is the state’s only maximum security facility and it houses the Death Row inmate population. Total housing capacity of the prison is 904 inmates.
