A short drive from Interstate 24, off of exit 45, is the West Kentucky community known by locals as “Old Eddyville.” This is the home of Kentucky State Penitentiary. Up until 1964, the prison was in the center of the small river town, but during the construction of Barkley Dam, the entire business district of Eddyville and most homes were moved a few miles to the northwest, leaving the prison standing alone atop a hill, as the waters of Lake Barkley rose around it.
