On March 31, 1998, Kentucky law changed to mandate the use of lethal injection for executions. Electrocution can still be used as a means of execution, however, if chosen by those condemned inmates who were sentenced prior to the change in the law, thus the need to keep the electric chair at the Penitentiary. Death by electrocution is a two minute cycle involving the administration of 2,400 volts for 15 seconds and then 240 volts for 105 seconds.
